 Dog Training Introduction

Every year around the world, thousands upon thousands of abandoned dogs are put down and destroyed.  Why does this happen?  Why are these dogs abandoned in the first place?  Most of the time, it is due to the fact that the dog was never properly trained.  Without proper training, the dog picked up and learned poor habits that the owner did not know how to correct.  At some point, the frustrated owner throws up his or her hands and says “I give up!”  The sad truth though is that the chances of a dog finding a new owner are extremely slim.  One way or another, due to poor training, the dog is most likely on the road to becoming a statistic.

Whether you know it or not, you are constantly training your dog.  If you are not helping him understand what the good behaviours are, he will pick up negative ones very easily.  Your job as a dog owner is to learn how to communicate with him.  You want to learn how to motivate him towards positive actions, as well as how to let him know he’s made a mistake.  Remember, your dog does want to please you.  You always have that in your favour.  If he is misbehaving, it is because you have not been clear enough or consistent enough with him.  Always remember, you are the key factor in whether your dog is well trained or not, not your dog.

A trained dog is a joy to be around.  He piddles in the correct places, and on your command.  He stops barking when you ask him to.  He doesn’t tear up your furniture or your yard, and he gets along with your cat to boot!  Proper training can so strengthen the bond between owner and dog that it will almost appear as if your dog can read your mind.  He will learn to read your body language, emotions, and habits, which will allow him to anticipate your commands before you make them.  Taking the time to train your dog properly will definitely yield big benefits for you and your pooch now and in the future.
